About Maya Angelou


Maya Angelou (1928-2014) was an American poet, memoirist, and civil rights activist. She is best known for her autobiographical book "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," which tells the story of her childhood and young adulthood in the segregated South.

Angelou was born Marguerite Annie Johnson in St. Louis, Missouri. She had a difficult childhood, marked by poverty, racism, and trauma, including being raped by her mother's boyfriend when she was only eight years old. Despite these challenges, Angelou went on to have a successful career as a writer and performer.

In addition to "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings," Angelou wrote numerous other books, including poetry collections like "Just Give Me a Cool Drink of Water 'fore I Diiie" and "And Still I Rise," as well as memoirs like "Gather Together in My Name" and "The Heart of a Woman."
